Relationships and Social Life

This information is provided for your consideration; remember to always consult with your healthcare team.

Generally speaking, people with cystic fibrosis can enjoy all the aspects of social and family life that someone without the disease can. Going out with friends shouldn't be a problem as long as you continue to take care of yourself and avoid unhealthy behavior such as smoking and drinking. However, there are some important considerations for people with cystic fibrosis patients to keep in mind. One aspect of family life that may cause difficulty is having siblings who do not have cystic fibrosis.

A big question that often comes up for cystic fibrosis patients, especially younger patients, is who to tell they have it. Deciding to tell someone about your condition can be a nerve-wracking experience. Most caretakers and psychologists agree that the best way to handle this question is to be open with your condition. Most people, both adults and people your own age, will react in a supportive and inquisitive manner.

Another important topic, for all teenagers, is dating and the formation of intimate relationships. Teens with cystic fibrosis should not feel especially limited in this aspect of their social life. If you are close with someone, you should tell them about your disease; informing them will help you avoid awkward situations or having to explain frequent bathroom visits or taking pills before every meal. When it comes to more long-term relationships and the topics of marriage and having children, a few more cystic fibrosis related issues might arise.
